I’m fascinated by the importance of music in our lives. Even in my own life.
When I was a kid, my grandmother played Billie Holiday all day long on the Victrola. Lady in Satin. I heard it so often that I wore a flower in my hair when I was 3 years old.
She would also take me up to Harlem for a fish fry. Then we’d go across the street to the Friday afternoon concerts at the Apollo Theater. Every Friday afternoon Fats Domino played the Apollo theater. I was into the blues and boogie woogie before I entered kindergarten.
Back then I spent a great deal of time with my uncle, who I adored. When he was not getting in trouble, he was hanging out on the corner actually doing The Doo Wop Thing with his friends. It amazes me now to think that he let his little niece hang out with him and his friends on the streets harmonizing together. It was a real hoot!
For most of my single-digit years, the radios were taller than I was. I know you know the ones I mean! I would stand in front of a radio to listen to it, as if it were a television with a tiny tiny screen. I was fixated by those things, so much so that I even got into CB radios and Ham radios. I just love it.
Early in my double-digit years, I was consumed with the music of WNEW, and WBLS in New York City. Even at the age of 15, when I became a jazz lover, those two radio stations we're always close by. When New Jersey added WGBH, my radio life was abundant. At age 15!
But before FM radio stations started to grow, WMCA and WABC on the AM dial gave me my foundation, by playing the music we play today on WECK in Buffalo. I know the music and lyrics to each and every one of these songs.
So right now, fifty years later, these tunes and the memories attached, are woven deeply into my bones!
Looking ahead, working here alongside these amazing people, and for our great listeners in Western NY - this will undoubtedly be the best time of my life!
I hope that you will join me for the fun!
WECK Radio is the perfect place for me to be, and I'm over the moon to now be a part of Buffalo’s Number One Oldies Station!
